Half the gathering was stoned.
Just as heâd suspected. Coen chuckled.
Riley whacked him with the back of her hand.
âItâs not funny, Coen. Someone could have been hurt.â
âHow? By saying whatâs on their mind?â
âPeople have been known to get socked in the face when they fail to filter.â
âSome might deserve it.â
Behind her square glasses, Rileyâs gray-blue eyes narrowed. âWhat if one of these folks got into a vehicle accident on their way home?â
âWasnât going to happen.â
âWhen did you become omniscient?â
âI guarantee you that Maggie and every other non-stoned personâs thoughts in this gym were already turning to a substance issue. That many people donât lose their minds at the same time without some outside influence.â
âThe thought never crossed my mind.â
âHave you ever done pot?â
âNo, butââ
âLet me clarifyâevery non-stoned person, who has intimate knowledge of marijuanaâs side effects, were already considering the possibility.â
âI suppose you fall into that category.â
âRight smack dab in the middle of it.â
She crossed her arms. âWhat was Scott thinking?â
âNothing too deep, I imagine.â
âIâm glad I didnât eat any of those.â
âNo, youâre not.â
âAm too.â
âAdmit it. Youâd like to lose control.â
âI donât enjoy apologizing.â
âI donât follow.â
âLosing control means either you say something stupid or too revealing or you dance on the tabletops or fart in public or flash a cute boy orââ She clamped her lips closed.
âOr what?â
âNothing. You lose control, do things you normally wouldnât, embarrass yourself to high heaven, and then apologize for being an idiot.â She tapped her fingers against her folded arm. âSo itâs best not to lose control in the first place and avoid all the drama.â
He moved closer until his chest brushed her shoulder. âTell me about these children you want to have with me?â
Her body convulsed as if heâd slapped her. When she said nothing, he brushed the back of his fingers along her stubborn jaw.
âHow many do you think? One?â He shook his head. âNo, he would need a sister to terrorize.â
Still, she kept silent.
âTwo? Three? Four?â
A reluctant smile pulled at the corner of her mouth.
âI could try to pump out a few more swimmers for five, but Iâll be dried up before six.â
âStop!â She cupped a hand over his mouth. âMy brain isnât equipped to think about kids right now.â
Disappointment stabbed at his gut. He kissed her palm and gently pried her hand away. âThen you were speaking in generalities.â
âYes. No.â She huffed out a frustrated breath and fastened her uncompromising gaze on his.
Something inside him retreated. Had he misread her comment about kids? Was she instead about to tell him that she couldnât handle their long-distance relationship? Is that why she had thanked him for loving her? Was she giving up on them? Him?
Steel plates rolled up his spine and snapped into place, cutting off his retreat. He wouldnât let her throw them away. He would fight for her as he did for his country. The warrior inside him awakened.
âWhatever youâre about to say, stop,â he said.
âI need toââ
âWeâre not breaking up.â
âWhat?â
âI know this long-distance thing is hard, but it wonât be forever.
